We all hope deep down that love can withstand the stitch of time. A couple who’ve been together for 80 years, having endured separation at the hands of both war and of the mind, have finally reunited in a nursing home room.

Ken Harris is 102 years young and he is celebrating his 80th anniversary with his wife, Margaret, who three years his junior. As mentioned, they first endured separation when Ken enlisted as a soldier during the war.

According to the BBC, “They hold hands every day now because of the memory of being separated in the war,” said their daughter-in-law Pat Harris. Ken had also kept a beloved wedding photo in his wallet ever since he was deployed to Burma in World War Two with the South Wales Borderers.

Reportedly, they spent everyday with each other after Ken returned home from the war until Margaret was sent to a special care home after being diagnosed with dementia.

Trouble struck again as Ken feared they would never see each other again after he was sent to the hospital with a broken hip after a fall. The incident had happened six weeks before their 80th anniversary! Ken’s fears for the worse turned out to be untrue when he was eventually given an all-clear to leave the hospital after a month. He then arranged to have a room at the nursing home to be with Margaret.

Explaining their love story, “When Ken went into hospital he didn’t think he would ever see her again. It is so fortunate that a room became available at Margaret’s home,” explained Pat, “It has been a real battle trying to keep them together. Ken gave his life for his country and he deserves to be able to be with his wife…They are a very loving couple and we are so proud to have celebrated their 80th anniversary with them.”
