Wendy and Tim are a self-proclaimed “rock ‘n’ roll hair couple,” and boy, do they have the hair to prove it.
The couple had been married for 20 years, and had kept their hair uncut for over half that time. While Tim and Wendy enjoy their unique look, their good friends Cindy and Kirk say it’s just horrific.
“They really need help,” Cindy said in a video she sent to Oprah, desperately hoping she would help them update their looks.
“Oh, I hate their hair.”
“Their hair is making them look 10 years older than they really are,” Kirk added.
To make matters worse, Wendy keeps her long hair in what Cindy calls her “little grandma bun.”
“That bun has to go!” Cindy said. “The ringlets—oh my. The whole thing needs to go! She is not a grandma.”
Wendy conceded that her style probably made her look older than she really was—at age 39, she said perhaps her hair and makeup made her look 45 to 50. She hadn’t changed her makeup in 20 years, and her outfit day in and day out was jeans, work boots, and a T-shirt of some sort.
“I would like my wardrobe to make me look younger,” she said. She just didn’t know how.
Tim, on the other hand, has played bass guitar in a little rock band for years, and kept the hair to go with it.
“Have you ever walked behind a horse swishing? That’s what his hair looks like,” his friend Kirk said.
“I’m 43 years old and I think I look somewhere between 50 to 60—on a good day,” Tim conceded.
Oprah took pity on the couple, and invited them onto her show for a complete makeover—hair and wardrobe and all.
“Y’all were very candid,” she said.
“We took Wendy out of the ’70s,” the host said.
Next it was Tim’s turn to come out—a surprise for Wendy as well, as they hadn’t seen each other’s new looks yet.
The two burst into exclamations and ran to hug each other.
“You’re gorgeous!” Tim said. “You’re so handsome!” Wendy said.
“The experience on Oprah was almost like a wedding day,” Wendy said years later. She and Tim had gotten married in Las Vegas, and it was a small affair. The event was as close as they got to a wedding ceremony.
Watch the reveal below:
Sadly, in 2008, Tim passed away after a serious heart attack. He had a huge “rock star” funeral, Wendy told Oprah in a follow-up interview.
He was buried in the Prada suit he got from Oprah’s makeover, with his leather jacket over it.
In her grief, Wendy decided to learn music. She decided to join Tim’s band, and being around his bandmates had helped her cope.
“Music has actually saved my life,” she said.
Wendy has updated her look and kept the curls, but she decided to grow her hair out longer after the makeover.
“I’m glad that the whole world got to see how we felt about each other,” she said of the experience. “I wish everybody could express the way they feel about the one they love like that, in front of the whole world.”
